Programme of the Goethe-Institut at the Cairo Book Fair Readings, book presentations and discussions Sunday, 22.1.- Monday, 6.2.2012 German Community-Stall in the Hall of the International Book (formerly „Italia", opposite Hall 5), Cairo Fair Ground in Nasr City
The view from the outside: German books about the Arab World at the Cairo Book Fair At the 43. International Book Fair in Cairo the Goethe-Institut presents readings and discussions with German and Arab authors. Among the highlights of the programme are two book presentations which focus on the political changes taking place in the Arab world. Following the official opening of the German Community Stall by German Ambassador Michael Bock on 23 January, on the 24th the Egyptian scholar Hamed Abdel-Samad will present his latest book „Krieg oder Frieden - Die arabische Revolution und die Zukunft des Westens" ("War or Peace - The Arab revolution and the future of the West"), which will shortly be released in Arabic. Mr Abdel-Samad has been living in Germany since 1995 and is one of the most well-known Arab intellectuals in the German-speaking countries. On 2 February the German journalist Heiko Flottau will read from his book „Die eiserne Mauer - Palästinenser und Israelis in einem zerrissenen Land" („The Iron Wall - Palestinians and Israelis in a country torn apart"), which has recently been in released in Arabic. Flottau discusses the historical background of Israel's construction of the wall on the border to Palestine and the Palestinian resistance movement. The Egyptian translator of the book, Abier Megahed, will also be present. The event will be in two languages. On 31 January the Goethe-Institut presents a discussion with the TRANSIT editorial team of the Goethe-Institut. "TRANSIT" is an online journal, written by young bloggers and journalists in Egypt, the Middle East and North Africa who describe how they experience this time of transition. At the book fair the team will introduce itself and invite visitors to discuss with the journalists the work of TRANSIT, the situation in the Arab world and the view from Germany. Away from the Fair Ground in Nasr City, on 29 January the Goethe-Institut invites to a literary evening with the Syrian-born poet Adel Karashouli, who has been living in Germany for 45 years. Mr Karashouli, who is in town to take part in the jury meeting for the German-Arab Translation Prize, will read some of his German and Arabic poems. The event takes place in the library of the Goethe-Institut Downtown (5, Sharia al-Bustan). Like every year, visitors of the book fair can also purchase German-language books from the Frankfurt Book Fair at the German Community Stall.
