Announcement: Winners of the Prize for German-Arabic Translation |

 The winners of the Prize for German-Arabic Translation of Fiction 2012 have now been chosen. Dr. Wahid Nader won the prize in the category „Established Translator" for his translation from the novel „Du stirbst nicht" ("You won't die") by Kathrin Schmidt into Arabic. Mr Nader, born 1955 in Bmanneh, Syria, has been living in Magdeburg, Germany since 1985 and works as a lecturer, author and translator. Among his translations into Arabic so far are works by Herta Müller, Daniela Danz and Erich Fried. His own poetry has also been published. Dr. Hebatallah Fathy's translation from the novel „Ein Zimmer im Haus des Krieges" („A room in the house of war") by Christoph Peters, which centers around a German terrorist in 1990s Egypt, won the first prize in the category „Young Translator". Ms Fathy lives in Cairo and works as an assistant professor for modern German literature at Cairo University. The winning entries were chosen by an independent German-Arab jury, composed of literary translators, academics and critics, among them the novelist Youssef Ziedan, the poet Adel Karasholi and Kerstin Wilsch from the „International Institute for Teaching Arabic to Speakers of Other Languages" in Amman.
Among the selection criteria were the translation's fidelity to the original, but also the choice of the German text in view of its literary quality and relevance for Arabic-language readers. Both prizes will be awarded on Friday, 16 March 2012, at 5pm at the Leipzig Bookfair (Congress Centre, Lecture Room 9), by the President of the Goethe-Institut Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dieter Lehmann.
